About the museum
Vårdmuseet in Västerås is run by Medicinhistoriska Sällskapet Westmannia, a non-profit association founded in 1994 to document and tell the story of the cultural heritage of health care, with a focus on Västmanland. The goal of creating a museum of medical history was reached in 2016, when the museum opened in November in the old hospital building from 1928.
The museum shows authentic care environments such as a hospital ward, an operating theatre and a dental surgery, and there are examples of how mental illness was treated. In the display cases are instruments and equipment from the 18th to the 20th century, used for diagnosis, treatment and relief, including very early X-ray equipment from Sala from 1904.
The pharmacy section is a small room with objects from the time when medicines were made in pharmacies. The prescription counter, wall decoration and counter come from the Hjorten pharmacy (apoteket Hjorten) in Västerås and were made in 1908 in connection with a rebuild. The museum relies on volunteer efforts and is open on certain selected days.
