About the museum
Västerås konstmuseum is built on the art collection that Västerås Konstförening (the Västerås Art Society) began to build up after its formation in 1919. The collection today comprises around 10,000 works, mainly by Swedish artists, and Västerås municipality took it over in 1972. For many years the art was shown in the town hall by Fiskartorget.
In September 2010 the museum moved to Karlsgatan 2 in central Västerås, where it shares the building with Västmanlands läns museum. The building is the old Mimerverkstaden (Mimer Workshop), which Asea had built from 1911 for the manufacture of electric motors.
The museum shows mainly Swedish and Nordic contemporary art. The basic exhibition Samlingen (The Collection) presents a broad selection from its own collection, while the museum’s two inner rooms are used for temporary exhibitions. The museum is also responsible for the municipality’s public art, which is found in streets, squares and municipal premises around Västerås, and it runs the Konstlabbet (Art Lab) for children, young people and school classes.
