About the museum
Bäckefors museum is in an old school building from 1829 in Bäckefors in Dalsland. The museum is run by Bäckefors local heritage and future association, which also gives guided tours of the local history museum and of the ruins at the ironworks.
The collections consist of folk objects, older household items, carpentry tools and tools from coppersmithing and shoemaking. On the upper floor there is a schoolroom with teaching materials from the 19th century, an exhibition on the history of the ironworks, and a flat.
Bäckefors ironworks was started in 1767 and grew greatly after Carl Fredrik Waern took it over in 1823. In 1829 it became the first ironworks in Sweden to introduce the so-called Lancashire process, a hearth-refining method for making wrought iron, and contacts were made with smiths from Wales. The ironworks closed at the end of the 19th century but later got new activities, including a bolt and nail factory from 1950, and was finally shut down in 1977.
