About the museum
Melleruds museum opened on 11 May 1985 after a year’s work by members of the newly formed Mellerud–Holm–Järn local heritage society. The museum is on the second and third floors of the old courthouse, which was built in brick in 1909 and was used as a courthouse until 1996. As early as the 1920s, folk collections were kept in the attic of the courthouse, but they only came into their own in the museum’s room settings. The municipality owns the building and uses the ground floor for meetings and conferences.
The museum shows settings from different periods: a backstuga (small cottage) where the poor lived, a workers’ dwelling from the 1920s and 1930s, a farmer’s kitchen and a parlour in a higher-class setting. On Hantverksgatan (Craft Street) there are the smithy, the tailor and the shoemaker, and in the outbuilding (logen) there is a threshing machine with flails. There is also a model of the medieval castle Dalaborg, a village shop, a photographer’s studio, a telephone exchange and a schoolroom. On the third floor there is an extensive genealogy archive with church registers, maps and a reference library of parish books and family books from all over Dalsland. There, visitors can search death registers, population registers and other registers on computer.
