About the museum
When the school in Årbol in Ånimskog, just over 80 years old, closed in 1963, it began to live on as a museum. The idea was born in 1965, and over a ten-year period objects were collected and the classrooms were set up. The museum was inaugurated on 26 April 1976 and, by its own description, has one of Sweden’s most comprehensive school collections from the 19th century up to our own time. The founder and curator was Tage Stahre.
On the ground floor there are two classrooms and a cloakroom, and on the upper floor a large exhibition hall, Tössbohallen, in the old school loft, together with a research centre. The collection comprises school furniture from different periods, about 6,000 school books from ABC books to later reading books, school wall charts, money boxes (sparbössor) and traffic-education material. In the display cases teaching materials and aids are shown, for example models of radio sets and a large collection of school radio booklets (skolradiohäften).
The museum is run by a foundation with the support of an association and is open during the summer. Guides show visitors round and tell about the history of the school, and children can try writing with ink and a dip pen.
