About the museum
Kanalmuseet i Håverud is run by Skålleruds hembygdsförening (Skålleruds Local Heritage Association), which was formed in 1952, largely through voluntary effort. The museum shows the history of the Dalsland Canal and life by rivers, lakes and the canal from the 19th century to the present. According to Turistrådet Västsverige (the West Sweden Tourist Board), it is housed in a building that belonged to a paper mill founded in 1880, and machines from the mill are also displayed in the building.
The Dalsland Canal was built in 1864–1868 to designs by Nils Ericson, and Werner Ericson was responsible for the daily work. The canal route is 254 kilometers long, but only about ten kilometers are dug canal; the height difference is 66 meters. At Håverud the problem of the rapids was solved by an aqueduct over which the canal runs across the falls.
The exhibitions have been renovated since 1997 and use color and form to create settings from earlier times. The collections cover local industry such as ironworks, sawmills, shipyards, brickworks and paper mills. The association also owns the defence installation Skans 453 by lake Glycksjön, about two kilometers north of Håverud.
