About the museum
Bävsjöryd Såg belongs to Bävsjöryd farm, Lerum’s oldest family farm, with roots going back to the 16th century. In the early 20th century two enterprising brothers, Ivar and Olle Olsson, lived there, and they built the red-painted sawmill building between 1919 and 1921. They installed a used belt-driven frame saw from Töreboda and a new edging machine from Rosenfors. The sawmill was first water-powered, but the water was not enough and they soon switched to a steam engine, a so-called locomobile. When electricity came to Bävsjöryd in 1936 the locomobile was replaced by an electric motor, and today the sawmill is driven by an old diesel engine. The planing mill in the grey extension was completed in 1934.
During the sawing season, from January to June, six or seven men worked at the sawmill handling logs, sawing, edging, stacking and handling firewood. Many houses and holiday cottages in the area were built with timber from here, and the sawmill operated for about 50 years.
In 1993–2005 the buildings, machinery and surroundings were restored by a non-profit association, and the sawmill was reopened in spring 2005. Since then it has been run as a working-life museum with annual open-house days with guided tours, a café, a birdhouse workshop and sawing with the frame saw. The sawmill is part of a network of forestry museums in Sweden.
