About the museum
Nääs is mentioned in the archives as early as the early 16th century, and in the 18th century the estate was owned by a director of the East India Company. The castle became the home of the businessman August Abrahamson, Nääs's last private owner. When he died on a May day in 1898, time almost stood still in the house, and the interiors, furniture, art and many personal objects have been preserved ever since.
Among the richly furnished rooms, all the new styles of the era are represented, and the picture collection is a typical example of 19th-century salon painting. Nearly 300 works of art are in the house. The castle is considered one of Scandinavia's most complete and untouched late-19th-century environments.
Behind Nääs stood also Nääs slöjdlärarseminarium (Nääs Seminary for Handicraft Teachers), which was active from 1874 to 1966 and became world-famous around 1900. There the so-called Nääspedagogiken (Nääs pedagogy) was developed, and many well-known people have been associated with the place. Today Nääs is managed by the August Abrahamsons stiftelse (August Abrahamson Foundation). In addition to the castle tours there are the castle park, a kaffestuga (coffee cottage), the Slottsbod (palace shop), courses in handicrafts and building conservation, and exhibitions in the building-conservation centre.
