About the museum

Bergviks Industrimuseum opened on 25 November 1974 to keep alive the memory of the world’s first sulphite pulp mill. At the opening, county governor Hans Hagnell started a turbine from Bergvik’s first hydroelectric power station. The museum is housed in a building from the time when Bergvik had its first sulphite mill, with roots in the 1870s. The chemist Carl Daniel Ekman put Bergvik on the map when he succeeded in turning theories and experiments into industrial production.

The museum is not only about Ekman. It also covers Bergvik & Ala AB, from its formation in 1852 to the company’s dissolution, with its pulp industry, chemical industry, chain forge, electricity production and forestry management. It tells the industrial history of the lower Ljusnan river, in Bergvik, Askesta, Sandarne, Ala and Ljusne, with sawmills, pulp mills, forests, board and plywood production, electricity generation and chain manufacturing. Objects, models and photomontages tell the story, and a large oil painting by Albert Blombergsson depicts a future works community in the mid-19th century.

During the museum’s first two decades it was run by Bergvik & Ala AB. Since 1993 it has been managed by the association Bergviks Allting, which has the museum as its main base and runs it on a voluntary basis. Besides guided visits, lectures, concerts and film screenings are held.
