About the museum

Fiskaremuseet Gäddan is a fisherman’s house in the Gäddan block in Öster, Söderhamn, which Söderhamns Kust & Skärgårdsförening (Söderhamn Coast & Archipelago Association) bought in 1997. The farmstead is today counted as one of the best-preserved in Öster and is sometimes called Fiskarestan. The part of the house along Östra Storgatan was built in the early 19th century or earlier, and the angled building along Hambreusgatan was erected after the great fire of 1876, which left many people homeless.

In the museum visitors can see how a fishing family lived in the 19th century, and the exhibition area shows objects and pictures of the archipelago and fishing in the past and present. The low outbuilding along Hambreusgatan is old and has housed a shoemaker’s workshop, a smithy, a stable and a woodshed. Restoration of the outbuilding began in 2004 and it was inaugurated in summer 2008. It contains two museum rooms with fishing gear, engines and tools for barrel-making, a storeroom, an archive opened in 2013, and a small gallery for art exhibitions by local artists.

The association has an extensive picture archive, which means that different themes can be shown at different times. The museum is the starting point for the annual Österdagarna (Öster Days).
