About the museum
The forge by the Norralaån river in Kungsgården was the first forge in Hälsingland to be granted a privilege for two hammers, in 1772. The hammer works is driven by a large water wheel and is described as unique of its kind; the architect Ferdinand Boberg visited the forge and sketched it. At one time there were about thirty water-powered works in Kungsgården.
The forge is also called Norins smedja (Norin’s forge), after the family that ran it. After a renovation in 1985, when the water wheel was built completely new, Norrala hembygdsförening (Norrala Local Heritage Society) owns and runs the forge. Blacksmithing activities, courses and study circles are held there, and in summer the association organises forging evenings when visitors can watch smiths at work. In the evenings coffee and fika with smithy biscuits (smedkakor) are sold, and local folk musicians (spelmän) provide music.
The local heritage society also owns and maintains an octagonal fire-engine house (spruthus) with a horse-drawn fire pump, and Hillman’s mill in Kungsgården.
