About the museum
Bersbo was part of the Åtvidaberg copper works, which in the 1800s was the country's second-largest copper producer after Stora Kopparberg in Dalarna. A mining community grew up around the mines, and buildings and technical remains from it survive at the mining field.
The Adelswärdska shaft was built in the final phase of the copper works to improve hoisting and find new ore that could secure the works' future. Around 1900 it was electrified with power from a power station at Forsaström south of Åtvidaberg. The electricity drove hoists and pumps and was used for lighting, drilling compressors and firing explosive charges. The shaft house over the shaft was designed by the architect Carl Westman and is clad in wood shingles; Jan Kruse has listed it as one of Sweden's ten most remarkable shaft houses.
The association Bersbo koppargruvor was formed in May 2014 to preserve what remains of the mining community and develop tourism. An initial grant from Leader Sommenbygd led to an inspection of the shaft house and applications for funding for building conservation. The association is working on restoring the Adelswärdska shaft, the Storgruvan shaft house and the Kruthuset (powder house), and has built a post-built shelter by the shaft as a protected meeting place for guided tours and fika.
