About the museum
The Biografmuseet (Cinema Museum) in Säter was founded on collections donated by the film and TV photographer Erik Wester (1931–1997), and the museum was inaugurated on 11 January 1989. It received a start-up grant from the Swedish Film Institute (Svenska Filminstitutet) and has since received objects from, among others, Svensk Filmindustri and Sveriges Television, which helps to develop the television history section. In 1995 the museum was awarded a Guldbagge (the Swedish film award) for its good presentation of the history of the moving image.
The museum is housed in Säter's former axe factory next to road 70 in central Säter. It is owned by Säter Municipality and run by the association Biljettkassan (the Ticket Office). The exhibition is built up as a series of period settings, or rooms, which together form a permanent exhibition on the history of the moving image. At its heart is the tastefully furnished museum cinema, with features from different eras, and next to it is a complete machine room with projectors.
The museum also shows the history of television, with cameras, monitors and a period TV corner from the 1960s. Among the larger objects is Sveriges Radio's first OB van (OB-buss), which now stands in a special bus garage built with support from Sparbanksstiftelsen Dalarna (the Dalarna Savings Bank Foundation).
