About the museum
Vikmanshyttan in the southern Dalarna bergslag (mining district) is an old works village. Of the older works buildings there remain, among others, the Angersteinska smedjan (Angerstein Smithy) from 1798, built under the works owner Johan Fredrik Angerstein, and a roasting furnace (rostugn) that was used from 1846 to the early 20th century.
The works museum has been owned and run since 1981 by the local heritage society in Vikmanshyttan. The first museum space to be made ready was the old carpentry workshop from 1799, which today is used both as an exhibition space and as a coffee house (kaffestuga). The facility has since grown to nine buildings.
The museum includes, among others, the Angersteinska huset (Angerstein House) as an exhibition space; the Hantverksstugan (Crafts Cottage), where 30–40 local exhibitors show and sell art and crafts; the kornskruven from Tallgatan, with exhibitions on two floors; and the annex with a workers' dwelling as it could look in the 1910s–1920s. In addition there are Källströms smedja (Källström's Smithy), the Bagarstugan (Bakehouse) and an outdoor stage. Each year the permanent exhibitions are supplemented with temporary ones, and the association arranges a summer programme including midsummer celebrations.
