About the museum
Hembygdsmuseet Åsgårdarna tells the story of Säter’s history, of works industry, crafts and farm life. The area consists of 23 buildings, many of them well preserved and from the 17th century, and about 6,300 objects, mostly collected in the town and in the municipality’s villages.
The museum was set up in 1923, with county architect Magnus Dahlander as the driving force in Säter Local Heritage Association. He designed a village with three farmyards, two town farms and a farmhouse around the already existing Elfdahlsgården. In Elfdahlsgården there is one of the country’s few surviving pottery workshops from the 18th century. Among the permanent exhibitions, a smithy is also mentioned.
Since 1967 the museum has been owned and managed by Säter Municipality. The operation is currently being rebuilt: there is no staff on site, but everyone is welcome to visit the beautiful outdoor area. Programs, guided tours and opening hours are to be updated.
