About the museum
The association Hedemora Gammelgård was formed in 1908, following a youth meeting in 1905, and Karl Trotzig was the most driving force behind the project. The town donated land on the slope of Badelundaåsen in 1908, and the first building moved there was Storstugan from 1776. Gammelgården was inaugurated on 12 June 1915 with eight buildings and is one of the country’s oldest hembygdsgårdar (local heritage farms).
Today there are twelve buildings in the area, among them Trösklogen from 1679 with old agricultural tools, carts and fire-fighting equipment; Loftboden, with a shoemaker’s, carpenter’s, dairy and weaving room; Storstugan; a smithy for scythe preparation; Bastun from 1757, used for drying flax and grain; and Linbodarna, market stalls for linen products that were moved here from central Hedemora in 1916.
The collection comprises about 4,500 objects, mainly scythes that reflect Hedemora’s old scythe production. In summer there is a café in the area, and Hedemora’s official midsummer celebration is held here. There is also a memorial stone to Kerstin Hed and a bust of Karl Trotzig.
