About the museum
Strömsborgs ullspinneri lies by the Helge å a few kilometres south-east of Osby and originates in a cloth factory founded in 1837 by works owner Olof Olcén. Production was powered by water, and during the 19th century several other small industries stood along the river, including mills, a paper mill and a smithy. The factory first made woollen cloth but was later converted to spinning and dyeing yarn, often as contract work for customers who brought in their own wool. From the 1940s the factory was powered by electricity and then had eight to ten employees.
Production ceased in 1966, when the regulation of the Helge å and the construction of the Genastorp power station lowered the water level so much that the water was no longer sufficient for the washing and dyeing works. Osby Local Heritage Society bought the premises in 1969 and has run them as a museum ever since. The machinery and building have been renovated, and the machines can be run as they once were.
The two-storey building houses the carding room, spinning room, washing room, dyeing room and drying section, and the interior, dating mainly from the 1940s, is largely preserved. The spinning mill was listed as a building of cultural interest in 2003 (byggnadsminne), received the building conservation award from Sveriges Hembygdsförbund (the Swedish Local Heritage Federation) in 2009 and was named Industrial Heritage of the Year in 2011. It is the only surviving wool mill in Skåne.
