About the museum
Hässleholms Museum opened in 2002 to make room for the military museums that were in the former garrison. After 93 years Hässleholm had ceased to be a garrison town, and with the help of the municipality the museum received a former industrial building of about 6,000 square metres, of which 4,000 are used for exhibitions.
The museum is run by four independent associations: Hässleholms Militärhistoriska Förening (Hässleholm Military History Association), Hässleholms Brandkårsmuseiförening (Hässleholm Fire Brigade Museum Association), Garnisonsmuseet Hässleholm Vänner (Friends of the Hässleholm Garrison Museum) and Västra Göinge Hembygdsförening (Västra Göinge local heritage association). All activity is voluntary, and the associations help each other staff the museum. In a workshop on site, older vehicles are renovated and restored.
The military collections comprise the country's largest exhibition of Swedish tracked and wheeled vehicles. In addition there is a fire brigade museum with fire engines and equipment, and a carriage museum with horse-drawn vehicles, including some from Hovdala Castle (Hovdala slott). The carriage museum also displays the Måleböke wallpaper (Måleböketapeten), a large wallpaper painted by the artist Olof Nilsson in the mid-19th century, with motifs from Måleböke farm, Hovdala, Kristianstad and Malmö.
