About the museum
There has been milling at Svintuna for more than a thousand years. The exact date when the mill was built is unknown, but there was in all probability a facility already in the Viking Age. In 1399 the mill was owned by Queen Margareta, and it eventually came to belong to Krokek monastery and then to Gustav Vasa and the Crown. The Crown kept it until 1722, when it was sold to the owner of Stavsjö ironworks (bruk). Here mainly the large harvests from Vikbolandet were ground.
Harald Zetterberg ran the mill until 1968. It was then bought by Norrköping Municipality, which had it renovated to working condition in 1975–1976. The mill is driven by a six-metre-tall overshot water wheel (överfallshjul), where the water is led down a wooden chute and falls onto the wheel.
On the upper floor is Sweden’s only durdragspel museum. The collection is a deposit from the children of the accordion player Yngve Andersson (1916–1975), who collected accordions and recorded the music and stories of old fiddlers. Lions Club Kolmården looks after the mill with voluntary efforts, grinds flour and shows the mill to interested groups.
