About the museum
Kolmården marble has been quarried since the 17th century. In 1673 the Belgian-born Nicolaus Millich reported the deposit, and the marble was used, among other things, for the palaces in Stockholm and Drottningholm. For more than three hundred years the marble works on the shore of Bråviken was an important workplace; at its peak the works had about 150 employees and 33 registered quarries. Kolmården marble has adorned buildings such as Stockholm Palace, the Paris Opera, Rockefeller Center in New York and UN buildings in Geneva. Marble is still quarried today, but on a very small scale.
The Marble Works Museum opened in 2008 and is run by Krokek local heritage society. The site consists of about ten buildings of various sizes. The heart of the museum is the old workshop, where the local heritage society has restored a complete marble workshop with working machines that show how the marble was processed, and where marble products are displayed.
In a newer exhibition room the marble quarrying is shown, with tools, machines and models of the factory and a quarry in operation, as well as old and new films from the works. The association also runs a smithy, a carpentry workshop and a jewellery workshop, has a sales shop and arranges guided visits and blacksmithing courses.
