About the museum
Blekinge museum was founded in 1899 and is the county museum. Its roots lie in the Blekinge fornminnesförening (Blekinge Antiquities Association) from 1877, and in 1929 the museum association and the Blekinge hembygdsförbund (Blekinge Local Heritage Federation) merged. Since 1983 the museum has been run as a foundation, with Region Blekinge, Karlskrona Municipality and the Blekinge hembygdsförbund as its principal organisers. The museum also includes the open-air museum in Wämöparken, founded in 1910.
Since 1972 the museum has been housed in Grevagården near Fisktorget in Karlskrona, with the Wachtmeisterska palatset (Wachtmeister Palace) from 1703–1705 as its main building. The buildings are part of the World Heritage Site Örlogsstaden Karlskrona. The museum closed in October 2020 because of moisture and subsidence damage caused by seawater, and parts of the operation reopened in 2022.
In its exhibitions the museum tells the story of the World Heritage Site Karlskrona, of objects that have become symbols of Blekinge, and of the county’s prehistory from the end of the Ice Age to the Bronze Age. The museum also has a baroque garden, a shop, an information room and a playground with an archipelago theme. The object storage facility at Rosenholm is open to the public on special occasions.
