About the museum
Blockmakarens hus (the Block Maker's House) at Stigbergsgatan 21 on eastern Södermalm was built in the early 18th century and consists of two joined wooden houses. They were permanently inhabited until 1975. Stadsmuseet i Stockholm (the Stockholm City Museum) took over the house and opened it as a museum dwelling in May 1982.
The house has been restored to how it looked in 1917. At that time the block maker Gustav Andersson, employed by the navy, lived on the upper floor with his wife Katarina and their adult sons. He turned blocks used in the rigging of the large sailing ships, and the workshop was at home in the house. In the courtyard building the widow Emilia Gustavsson rented a room for herself and her five children. Among other work she was a newspaper delivery woman, and she moved out in 1923.
The dwelling lacks modern standards: three outdoor privies, water from a tap in the street, heating with wood-fired tiled stoves and a small kitchen with a wood stove. The visit depicts what life in Stockholm could look like during the housing shortage in the early 20th century.
