About the museum
The museum Bondens År is at Cesarstugan in Östra Tunhem outside Falköping, a complex with a restaurant, a general store, a theatre hall and a museum. The museum depicts Swedish rural life in the 1930s and 1940s, a period between the wars when the tractor had not yet come to farming and all tools were built for people or working animals.
On an exhibition area of over 600 square metres, visitors pass about 20 everyday situations and events, with cottages (torp), rooms and a living stream built indoors, period vehicles, clothing and tools, and a small clothes shop. The highlight is the some 50 life-size wax figures, made by two women from Jönköping, who also painted the landscape scenes on the walls. In several rooms you can hear conversations, music and poems in the Västergötland dialect.
The museum began to be built in 1995 and opened in 1999. For many years only pre-booked groups were received, but since the current owners took over in 2018 it has also been open for drop-in visits. Today it is open to pre-booked groups and at selected events. Photography is allowed, but the figures must not be touched, as their skin is hand-painted.
