About the museum
Bruksmuseet Smedsgården is in the district of Gamla Bruket in Sandviken. The house is a workers’ house (brukskåk) built in 1876 with four flats and two bachelor rooms in the attic, and it was used as a home until the end of the 1960s. In 1962 Sandvikens Jernverk donated the building to the town of Sandviken, and in 1975 Sandvikens bruksmuseum opened, named Smedsgården.
The museum shows homes from different periods in the history of the ironworks. Visitors can see how workers and foremen with families lived around 1900 and in the 1940s and 1950s, with furniture, kitchen equipment, lamps and curtains. In the attic there is a bachelor room and a textile room, and a small school museum shows what school was like in the past. There is also a small library with local literature.
The museum is run on behalf of Sandviken Municipality by ABF Gästrikebygden in cooperation with Sandvikens vänner and Smedsgårdens vänner (the friends of Smedsgården). In the garden, concerts, theatre performances with local history themes, family days and a Christmas market are held. In the annex at Malmgatan 11, lectures on local history and other subjects take place.
