About the museum
Gamla Stenhuset in Hammarby was built in 1738 as the first step in a planned larger manor-house development in stone, and is considered Gästrikland’s oldest secular brick residential building. The house was used for a long time for various purposes within Hammarby bruk (ironworks), where iron production had been carried on since the 1580s, and was later called Åstugan.
In September 1983 three residents of Hammarby asked Kopparfors AB for premises for material from study circles, the so-called Petre portrait collection (Petreska porträttsamlingen) and other objects and documents illustrating the history of the locality. The company responded positively and transferred the house to a foundation after the necessary renovation. The foundation was constituted on 7 September 1984, and the house was inaugurated on 10 November 1984.
The foundation’s statutes state that the public must be able to view the collections and use the premises for gatherings and courses. The house tells of iron production and the pulp industry, of works owners (brukspatroner), factory owners and workers, and is a link to the centuries-long history of the works village of Hammarby. Lectures are held on summer Wednesday evenings, and in the nearby works park there is a marked tree trail.
