About the museum
Burträsk Hattmuseum is run by Mats and Pia Klockljung. The couple began with a hat museum in Glommersträsk in 2010, built around a large collection of women's hats found in an attic that had belonged to milliner Jenny Petrina Stenqvist. After moving to Burträsk in 2020 they planned a new museum, and when a vacant premises appeared in Nävarnas hus, Burträsk Hattmuseum opened at the end of February 2022.
The collection comprises, according to various sources, 250–350 hats, mainly women's hats from the 1930s to the 1960s, but also a few men's hats and about ten hats from the 1980s. A large part comes from Jenny Petrina Stenqvist's unsold stock. The hats are there to be tried on, and a selection is for sale in aid of the organisation Operation Smile.
The museum is closely associated with Hattens dag (Hat Day), which the couple established in 2014. It is celebrated on the first Saturday in August in Burträsk with a hat parade, a hat walk, community singing and a picnic.
