About the museum
Bure Arkiv is a working life museum in Bureå, two mil south of Skellefteå. The museum is in Bure AB's well-preserved office building from 1952, designed by Birger Dahlberg, where most of the interior and furniture is intact from the 1950s. Visitors are free to walk around most of the rooms and experience the feel of the fifties.
The permanent exhibition tells the story of the sawmill and pulp industry in the village. The company was formed in 1796 as Bure Sågverksintressenter and ran a sawmill by a large waterfall in the Bureälven river. In 1873 it was reorganised as Bure Aktiebolag with a new steam sawmill by the sea, and from 1928 there was also a pulp mill. The sawmill closed in 1972 and the pulp mill twenty years later, in 1992. The museum also has an exhibition of old office machines and, since 2017, a special exhibition about Bure AB's sawmills through the ages, with a model and many pictures.
The building also houses the company archive from 1796–1992, with just over 5,000 archive boxes. It was preserved in Bureå through a foundation and is available for research during booked visits. In summer, lectures are held on Sundays.
