About the museum
Skellefteå museum is located at Nordanå, on the north side of the river only a five-minute walk from Skellefteå square. The museum moved to Nordanå in 1925, and its first home there was the old major’s farm Nyborg from 1764, which until 1850 was an officer’s farm (officersboställe). Today the main building is in the middle of the area, and Nyborg is once again part of the museum and houses the exhibition Hålla hus (Keeping the House).
Nordanå was laid out as a park and open-air area in connection with Skellefteå town’s centenary celebrations in 1945. Several historic buildings have been moved here, among them Östra stolpboden from 1726, the oldest building at Nordanå; Kågegården, a log-built Västerbotten farmhouse from the 1700s; and Bonnstan, a church town with roots in the 1600s. Many of the buildings are always open outdoors, while the open-air museum otherwise has summer opening.
On the top floor of the main building, Storsia, a permanent local-history exhibition of 500 square metres, shows the conditions under which people have lived from the Ice Age until 2020. On the site there is also Läroverket (the Grammar School), a meeting place for local history and research, and Exploratoriet (the Exploratorium) for experiments. The museum also runs MAN – Museum Anna Nordlander in Sara Kulturhus.
