About the museum
Bygdemuseet Ornö Sockenstuga (the Ornö Parish House Local Heritage Museum), also called Ornö Museum, is located in Kyrkviken between the church and the school. The parish house is a parstuga (double-room cottage) from around 1740 and was the meeting place for the parish council, assemblies and boards. The Ornö inn (Ornö Krogh) was housed in the building from 1781 to around 1800, and when the folk school regulations reached the island in 1845 it was used as a schoolroom and teacher's residence. Between about 1880 and 1950 the cottage was a poorhouse.
From 1953 the house was used as a museum for objects collected from the district, and these still form the core of the permanent exhibition. Today's museum started in 1987. Part of the house is furnished as an archipelago crofter's cottage (skärgårdstorp) from the 1800s, with furniture made by local joiners. Each summer a theme exhibition is shown in the Landboden (the Country Store), and in the Sjöboden (the Boathouse) the museum's nets and fishing equipment are displayed. The museum also has a large collection of pictures from the Ornö archipelago.
The association Bygdemuseet Ornö Sockenstuga has about four hundred members and also runs the Båtbyggarmuseet (Boatbuilders' Museum) and Anna Lindhagen's 18th-century cottage on the island of Sandböte. The hiking trail Lervassastigen, an open-air exhibition that is open around the clock, starts from the museum.
