About the museum

Årsta slott in Österhaninge was built in the 1660s for the admiral Claes Hansson Bielkenstierna and was completed by 1667 at the latest. The writer Fredrika Bremer spent her childhood summers here after the family bought the castle in 1804, and she returned to Årsta for the rest of her life. As an adult she lived as a guest of the Saxenberg family in the rooms that are now the castle's museum floor, and she died in her writing room on New Year's Eve 1865.

The interiors on the museum floor come from Gustaf Cedergren, who bought the castle in the early 20th century and used it as a summer residence, from the bedroom in gilded baroque to a bathroom in Art Nouveau. After Cedergren's death in 1919 the castle changed owners several times before Haninge Municipality bought it. The objects on the museum floor are managed by Årstasällskapet för Fredrika Bremer-studier (the Årsta Society for Fredrika Bremer Studies).
