About the museum
The museum is housed in an old salt store in Fiskarhamnen on Dalarö, built in 1865 by master pilot Frans Ludvig Öhman. At that time salt was the only way to preserve fish. In time the building became a storehouse, and in 1912 it was supposed to be demolished, but instead it was bought by the trader Fredrik Norberg, who for many years sold petrol and lubricating oil there.
Research engineer Anders Franzén at KTH (the Royal Institute of Technology) had spent many summers on Dalarö as a boy. In 1950 he bought the boathouse and used it both as a workroom for his wreck studies and as a place to stay overnight. Here he compiled his well-known wreck chart of sunken ships, and his work led to the discovery of the royal warship Vasa. Franzén donated the boathouse to a foundation in 1988, and Dalarö Local Heritage Society took over responsibility for it in 2003.
The room is full of memories from Franzén's travels, and there you can see, among other things, the bunk bed he slept in. Beside the boathouse stands a diving bell of 17th-century type, built to old drawings and used for notable trial dives on the royal warship Kronan. The bell was donated to the local heritage society and set up by the boathouse in 2008. The building has been a listed building since 2011.
