About the museum
Dalarnas Fornminnesförening (the Dalarna Antiquarian Association) was founded in 1862 and was the sixth association of its kind in Sweden. The collections received their first museum building in 1883, in the old gymnasium of the trivial school (trivialskolan), and opened to the public in 1892 as Dala Fornsal. In 1926 the collections moved to the Vallmanska villan, which was demolished in the 1950s, and in 1955 Dala Fornsal moved into the Konsthallen (art hall).
Dalarnas museum opened in 1962. In 1930 the association merged with Dalarnas hembygdsförbund (the Dalarna heritage federation) to form Dalarnas Fornminnes- och Hembygdsförbund, and since 1976 the Stiftelsen Dalarnas museum (Dalarnas Museum Foundation) has been the museum’s principal organiser. An extension in 1984 provided a workshop, offices and a lecture hall, and in 1985 Selma Lagerlöf’s study was installed in the museum.
The museum opened in new premises in 2007 under the name Nya Dalarnas museum. Between 2019 and 2024 objects were moved to the new store Tallen, which opened in 2024. The museum today shows exhibitions on, among other things, Dalarna’s industrial history and World Heritage, Dalecarlian painting, Dala horses and folk costumes, and it is also a knowledge centre for archaeology and built heritage in the county.
