About the museum
Gruvmuseet is located at Falu Gruva and tells the story of the mine's roughly thousand-year history and of the people who lived and worked there. The museum is described as Sweden's first technical museum. It has been completely rebuilt, with the work finished in 2017. The exhibitions cover the period from the Viking Age up to the designation as a World Heritage Site in 2001.
The mine is closely linked to the development of Sweden and Europe. Copper from Falun was used, among other things, in the roof of the Palace of Versailles and in the warship Vasa, and almost all Swedish monarchs have visited the mine. Well-known visitors through the ages include Carl von Linné, Queen Kristina and the inventor Christopher Polhem.
In the museum, visitors can climb mine ladders, touch copper ore, test how rocks are formed and learn how an amputation was carried out in the mine's emergency hospital. The building also houses Gruvans konsthall, an art hall, and a film hall where a 30-minute film replaces a guided tour underground for those who cannot or do not want to go down into the mine.
