About the museum
Esrange Space Center lies about 45 kilometres north-east of Kiruna and is run by SSC Space. For more than 60 years over 1,300 sounding rockets and stratospheric balloons have been launched from there, and large parabolic antennas are part of a global network of ground stations. Now SSC Space is building Europe's first satellite launch capability on the mainland.
The space base itself is not open to the public for security reasons. The visitor centre is outside the gates, by Esrange Guard, and is normally unstaffed. Both spontaneous visitors and invited guests can get an insight into the work behind the gates and into the company SSC Space there, and the exhibition also provides information about space activities in the whole Kiruna area. Free coffee, tea and cookies are available to help yourself.
