About the museum
LKAB:s besöksgruva, also called the LKAB Visitor Centre, lies inside the mountain in the Kirunagruvan (the Kiruna mine), the world's largest underground iron ore mine. The ore is extracted at very great depths using remote-controlled machines and driverless trains, and mining today reaches down to the 1,365-metre level. The visitor facility lies at the 540-metre level.
Visitors travel by bus from Kiruna Lappland Turistcenter directly into the mountain. The guide shows around the facility of about 20,000 square metres, where authentic mine environments with exhibitions and machines show how extraction and processing take place. A mining museum shows historic environments, work tools and photographs from the early 20th century.
The guide also tells the story of modern mining and of how it can make a whole town move, which is the case in Kiruna. The mine cannot be visited on your own, and at present there is no museum or information centre about the mining operations above ground.
