About the museum
Vita Huset is the old district constable's farm (länsmansgården) in Karesuando, built in 1888. The rural police officer (landsfiskalen) lived in the house until 1965. A sauna that was used as a delousing sauna during the evacuation years of 1944–1945 also stood on the plot. Karesuando Local Heritage Society (Karesuando hembygdsförening) has used the building since 1966, and it has recently been restored in the style of the 1940s.
The museum shows about 450 household and work objects, a photo collection and local stories. The exhibition covers Norwegian sea-fishing culture, Sámi culture and Finnish and Swedish Tornedalian culture, and shows how the Second World War affected the people of Karesuando. On the plot stands a memorial stone from 1995 to the Norwegian reserve police unit Bryhn, which came to Karesuando in 1945 to build transport routes to Kautokeino.
