About the museum
Finnskogsmuseet (Forest Finn Museum) is located at the village hall in Skräddrabo, about 2.5 Swedish mil (mil) south of Alfta and Edsbyn. The museum was founded in 1986 by Finn Rideland and Maths Östberg with the aim of collecting information and material about the Forest Finn regions of Sweden and Norway. Today it is the only pan-Scandinavian museum with Forest Finn culture as its theme, and its activities are run by Maths Östberg in cooperation with the Skräddrabo village hall association (bygdegårdsförening).
The indoor exhibition comprises just over 300 objects and as many photographs and maps from the various Finn districts, from Tiveden in the south to the Lapland region (Lappmarken) in the north, and from the coastal landscapes of Norrland in the east to Norway in the west. The exhibition is divided into sections for, among others, the Forest Finn areas of Norway, Värmland’s Finn district, Bergslagen’s Finn districts (finnmarker), Gästrikland, the museum’s home area in south-western Hälsingland, Orsa finnmark and Ångermanland’s finnmarker.
The museum also has one of the largest Forest Finn book and article collections, with about 6,000 books and booklets and about 5,000 pamphlets. There is also literature about and from Finland, Delaware, Tornedalen and Finnmark, as well as videos and music about Finnish culture.
