About the museum

The association Kusttraditioner (Coastal Traditions) was formed in 1982 and is run by volunteers. It now has about 450 members. In 1984 the association bought a mechanical workshop in Hönö Klåva and began converting it into a museum. Three rooms were ready for the opening on 13 June 1986, and the following year two more rooms were added. The museum was then joined to the forepart of the fishing boat Normy, built at Hälsö in 1938. From inside the museum, visitors can step into the forecastle (skansen) and experience how the fishermen lived during their voyages.

The museum portrays the history and development of fishing with gear and boat models. One special section deals with the Second World War, when 31 fishing boats and 91 fishermen were lost due to wartime events, most of them from Öckerö Municipality. There is documentation about the loss of the submarine Ulven in 1943 and about the salvage of a German submarine. Visitors can look through a real submarine periscope and climb the tower for a view all the way to Vinga. In summer the kåge (traditional fishing vessel) Fågel is often moored outside the museum, and from May to September art exhibitions are shown every week.
