About the museum
Vingamuséet is located on Vinga in Gothenburg's southern archipelago, in a red two-storey wooden house from the late 19th century. The house was the official residence of the lighthouse master. The lighthouse keeper Carl Gunnar Taube, father of Evert Taube, worked on Vinga from 1889 to 1905, and Evert Taube was born on the island in 1890 and spent his childhood here. The museum is run by the association Winga Vänner (Friends of Winga).
The exhibition depicts life on Vinga and the sea around the island. It includes, among other things, a model of a pilot cutter, models of an optical telegraph and a Morse apparatus, examples of flag signalling, school benches, and stories and photographs about the island's inhabitants. Shipwrecks and the efforts of the pilots are documented. Communication with Gothenburg began with optical signalling in the early 19th century and later used Morse telegraphy, when electricity was brought out from Brännö.
The first room on the right is devoted to Evert Taube and shows, among other things, his old lute, family photographs and a desk used by the lighthouse masters. A wax figure of him sits on an old kitchen sofa, looking towards the childhood home. In the same building is a flat that the association rents out to members.
