About the museum
Målilla-Gårdveda hembygdsförening (Målilla-Gårdveda Local Heritage Society) was formed in 1943 and is one of Sweden's largest. Between 1947 and 1950 the park's first seven buildings were erected, among them the old tannery (garveriet), a cowshed, a linbastu (flax-processing house), a two-storey residential house and a cottage. The park was inaugurated in 1948 and has since been extended with new buildings and collections.
Today some fifty buildings stand in the park, and the society has around 3,000 objects registered. Many of the houses contain their own museums with fittings and history from the area. The society also owns Hagelsrums masugn (blast furnace) outside Målilla and Målilla mekaniska verkstad (Målilla Mechanical Workshop) in the village.
Many events are held in the park during the summer half-year, such as national day celebrations, Motorns Dag (Engine Day) and Målilla market. The park area itself is accessible all year round, while the buildings can be visited indoors at set times during the summer or after advance booking.
