About the museum
Frövifors Pappersbruksmuseum is located in the old paper mill in Frövi, in the shadow of today's modern pulp and cardboard factory. The mill has an industrial continuity dating back to the mid-16th century. When a new mill was planned in 1974, the idea of preserving the old one arose, and Frövifors stood out as the best-preserved site in the country from the older machine-paper era. The museum was founded in 1984 and opened two years later.
The museum is an ecomuseum, meaning that it remains in its original setting. In two machine-hall wings of red brick stand two original yankee-type paper machines, PM III from 1907 and PM IV from 1911. The machine hall has been largely untouched since the last workers left it more than 40 years ago, and the last rolls of kraft paper are still in the machines. There are also transmission shafts for belt drives from water turbines.
In a separate hall, Dyngtvinnaren, Sweden's oldest preserved paper machine, built in 1867 in Edinburgh, is shown. The museum also shows an exhibition on packaging history, Japanese packaging art and the largest beer can exhibition in the Nordic countries, with some 22,000 cans. The museum is run by a foundation and was named Industrial Heritage of the Year 2023.
