About the museum
Nora Bergslags Veteran-Jernväg, NBVJ, is run by a non-profit association with roots in Museiföreningen Stockholm–Wästerås–Bergslagens Järnväg (the Stockholm–Wästerås–Bergslagen Railway Museum Association), formed in 1975. The association’s first goal was to buy and restore a former steam locomotive from SWB, which ran on an anniversary train in 1976. Afterwards vehicles were gathered in Sala.
When Nora Bergslags Järnväg was threatened with closure, the association decided in December 1977 to build a museum railway with Nora as its base, and in 1982 a decision was taken on a museum line between Gyttorp, Nora and Ervalla. Nora Bergslags Järnväg ran traffic in Nora until the turn of the year 1986, and the association gradually took over depots and workshops.
After a derailment at Öfalla in 1998, museum traffic ceased on large parts of the line. Today the association mainly runs steam trains and rail buses on the sections from Nora to Järle and to Pershyttan in summer. The railway in Nora celebrates 170 years in 2026 and is described by the association as Sweden’s oldest railway.
