About the museum
The railway environment in Nora is unique in Sweden, with well-preserved station buildings, lineside cottages, bridges and other buildings. The iron from the furnaces at Pershyttan and the surrounding area was to be shipped out into the world, and next to the station building in Nora a whole station area grew up. The line between Nora and Ervalla was Sweden's first standard-gauge railway.
Engine sheds and workshops with a smithy, foundry, sheet-metal workshop and carpentry were built in 1891, and the present station building was inaugurated in 1900. In the 1930s an office building was added, which today houses the railway archive, as well as a railbus workshop with a shed for diesel locomotives. Järle station, from 1853–54, is counted as Sweden's oldest station building.
Today Nora järnvägsmuseum is a living museum with veteran trains, exhibitions and archives. The goods warehouse, where goods were loaded and weighed, houses an exhibition with a reconstructed narrow-gauge track and a standard-gauge track with steam locomotives and carriages, where you can board some of the carriages. The Stiftelsen Nora Järnvägsmuseum och Veteranjärnväg (Nora Railway Museum and Veteran Railway Foundation) owns and manages the buildings, land and track, while the association Nora Bergslags Veteran-Jernväg (Nora Bergslag Veteran Railway) runs the train services.
