About the museum

The exhibition about the Kullsberg lime works is shown in the entrance building at Dalhalla outside Rättvik, in the old limestone quarry that is today a concert arena. It tells the story of limestone quarrying and lime processing at Kullsberget and several other sites in the area during the years 1898–1991.

Kullsbergs Kalkförädlings Aktiebolag (Kullsberg Lime Processing Company) was formed in 1898 by several local men. The lime had long been quarried and burned in small field kilns by farmers, and it was used, among other things, as a binder in building, as lime paint and as fertilizer. The lime works later supplied lime to manufacturing industry, including Grycksbo paper mill, Falu mine and the Domnarvet ironworks. The railway reached Rättvik in 1890, and a narrow-gauge line was built to transport lime and brick. When the limestone at Kullsberget was exhausted, quarrying moved to Amtjärn, Skålberget and Draggängarna.

The exhibition was produced by Thomas Jacobs from Västberg. After the quarry closed, the Draggängarna quarry became the stage for Dalhalla, where the first concert was held in 1994.
