About the museum
Gusta stone museum is in the old Gusta quarry in Vamsta, where the stone industry of Brunflo began. The industrial era of stone started in 1902, when the master builder Leonard Theodor Ellström from Östersund bought a limestone hill from the farmer Carl Petter Svensson. A factory was built in the quarry, and there gravestones, stairs and floors, façades and portal surrounds and sculptural stonework were made, with the help of, among other things, a stone-planing machine. The Gusta industry became very important for Brunflo’s development during the 1900s.
Brunflo local heritage society opened the Gusta stone museum in 2002. The museum tells of the development of limestone, the Gusta factories and the district’s development from farming village to urban settlement. The exhibition is outdoors along a path, where pictures and stories show the activity over the years.
The quarry is also a geological natural monument, and SGU (the Geological Survey of Sweden) has identified it as the best available illustration of the crustal movements that affected the eastern edge of the mountain bedrock.
