About the museum
Teknikland is at Optand airfield, which has been used as an airfield since the 1940s and during the Cold War was a secret air base. In 1995 Flyg och Lottamuseet (the Air Force and Lotta Museum) opened at the airfield with some thirty civil and military aircraft showing the aviation history of Jämtland, and an exhibition on the work of the air-traffic control towers.
In 2007 Stiftelsen Jamtli, together with Flyg och Lottamuseet, Militärmuseiföreningen (the Military Museum Association) and Jemtlands veteranbilklubb (the Jämtland veteran car club), formed the company Optand Teknikland AB, which built up Teknikland with support from an EU project. The facility opened on 5 June 2010. After a bankruptcy in 2012, when EU support was withdrawn, a new company, Jämtland Teknikland AB, took over the operation.
Today Teknikland is mostly run on a voluntary basis by members of the owning associations, with support from Stiftelsen Jamtli, and it is part of the network of the state’s defence-history museums. The exhibitions on vehicles, military history and aviation are built to be tried out and experienced, with play environments and activities for children.
