About the museum
Galtströms bruk was established in 1673 by Magnus Blix and was the first ironworks in Medelpad. In 1686 the works had two hammers and produced about 163 tonnes of bar iron per year, which was shipped to Stockholm. The works closed in 1916 and the sawmill closed in 1919. In the 19th century it was Medelpad's largest industrial plant, and in 1870, 333 people lived at the works.
The works environment is largely preserved and has been a listed building since 1995. Visitors can see the roasting hearth and blast furnace (rost- och masugnen), the works church from 1680, described as Norrland's first works church, the bakehouse (bagarstugan) where bread is baked in a wood-fired oven, and an exhibition of photographs in the barn. At the northern harbour in Otterviken there is a preserved steam crane. The manor house is used by the owner SCA as a conference facility and cannot be visited.
The installations were restored in 1955–1956 and have since been restored on several occasions. The steam locomotive Loke, built in 1887, once hauled ore and iron, and today is operated by Föreningen Galtströmståget (Galtström Train Association) on the works' museum railway.
