About the museum
The association Galtströmståget began its activities at Galtströms bruk (ironworks) in 1988 and was formally established in 1994. The aim is to develop the works into a living working-life museum. The association has completely restored the steam locomotive Loke, built a whole museum railway with track, bridges and rolling stock, and restored several dams at the works.
The track has a gauge of 891 mm (three feet) and runs beside the closed ironworks. The first narrow-gauge line was built from 1864 between the works and the harbour at Prästviken, a stretch of about 660 metres. Loke was built in 1887 by Kristinehamns Mekaniska Werkstad and was used at the works. Today the line is 2.4 km long, and an extension to Prästviken is planned.
The association also owns the steamboat S/S Ophelia (formerly Nordkust 4), built in 1885 for Galtströms bruk, which Riksantikvarieämbetet and Statens maritima museer wanted to preserve and which has been with the association since 2011. Under way are, among other things, a new railway bridge, a carriage shed, new passenger carriages, a water tower and a turntable.
