About the museum
Gammelgården lies high up on Majberget in Bengtsfors and is run by Bengtsforstraktens local heritage society, which was founded in 1928 to preserve and spread knowledge of the district’s traditions and cultural heritage. The open-air museum consists of more than 20 buildings that have been moved here from different parts of Dalsland, for example the Kölnan from Dalen in Nössemark, which was erected here in 1929.
On the site there are the stately main house of a wealthy farmer (storbonde), the simple cottage of a crofter, a soldier’s croft and a miller’s cottage, as well as several workshops and farm buildings. Among the houses are Strands herrgård (Strand manor), Storstugan (the Big Cottage), Ryggåsstugan and Maja-Lena’s cottage, the halmerskan, and in the Bedarummet room there are handicrafts by Beda Aronsson-Galle. Visitors can walk freely among the houses. Nearby there are hiking trails, lakes, barbecue areas and the activity trail Sök, finn och le.
In summer the houses are sometimes open, and the society organises guided tours, events and courses. Groups can book guided tours in advance. There is also a youth hostel nearby.
