About the museum
Gammelstad church village surrounds the large late-medieval stone church Nederluleå kyrka and is Sweden's largest and best-preserved church village. Of the country's 71 church villages, only 16 remain today, and most of them are ruins compared with how they once looked. Gammelstad has 404 church cottages with 552 rooms, and the whole World Heritage area covers around 520 protected buildings as well as road networks and archaeological ground. The site was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List on 7 December 1996.
The church cottages were built by farmers from villages more than one Swedish mil (mil, a Swedish unit of distance) from the church. They needed a place to stay overnight in connection with services, court sessions, parish meetings and markets. The church village also became a meeting place where people from different villages came together, and church festivals often led to new acquaintances. The cottages are still privately owned and are used a few times a year for church festivals, markets and cultural events; the rest of the time they stand empty. The land is owned by Nederluleå parish.
People have lived in the area for about a thousand years, already when it was an island in the archipelago. Traces of temporary settlements and slash-and-burn cultivation show that the area was used as pasture before the church claimed it in the 14th century. The visitor centre, Gammelstad Visitor Center, is located in the middle of the church village at Kyrktorget and is a good starting point. There you will find an interactive exhibition on the area's history, brochures and maps, a souvenir shop and guided tours; nearby is the open-air museum Hägnan.
